How Do I Know If My Roof Was Installed Properly?
While there are many layers to a roof, there are some obvious signs to tell if your roof was installed correctly. Whether your house is brand new or not, it’s important to know that your roof has been installed correctly.
Check for these signs:
- Check the flashing. Flashing is near chimneys, vents or skylights and is often made of steel material. Check to see if the flashing is pulling away from the roof, it was not installed correctly and will need to be fixed. Note: if the flashing is peeling or rusted, it’s just old and needs to be replaced.
- Give your roof a glance with your eyes and look for uniformity across the entire roof. Do you see irregular patches? If the roof is uniform, it should be ok. If there is irregularity in the roof, you may need to have it fixed.
- Around the edge of your roof, you should notice your roofing shingles hanging over the edge of your roof around 1” — 1 ½”, or about ½” — ¾” for drip edge flashing. This is done to control water from going into your house. If too much is hanging over the edge the wind will blow them off.
- Look for rotting roof decking. Look for visual signs of wood rot around your roof. If you notice any, then you will need to have your roof repaired.
